Hell you can completely destroy the setup yourself using options in Windows.
No doubt the way they are abusing it screws up icon caches or something. the Thumbnail handler shell extension setup just wasn't designed to be used this way. Then it looks through the thumbnail handlers for images, and sees one and uses it, which extracts the tile from the App and shows that. "No problem, we'll just hack it!" So the shortcuts to Apps are "hacked" so that windows explorer interprets them as Image files. Thumbnails, however, are design to work for image files.

Here is the bug filed with Google, with links to script/steps in there: Drive File Stream and Backup and Sync break Windows search icons for preinstalled UWP apps - Visible to Public - Issue Tracker () I've seen extended versions of the resolution-scale-change steps (specifically involving a ShellEx registry key and its permissions) that disable the part of Google Drive that causes the issue, but those steps are "a hammer much bigger than the nail" and I believe they'll lead to dissatisfaction with Google Drive, and future problems with ANY shell extension - just uninstall Google Drive rather than do that. Maybe there's a 3rd option for this second part, something Microsoft-sanctioned? It's a little fuzzy what the best long term workaround is for this short of Google fixing the bug in Google Drive, but I presume it's 1) uninstall Google Drive AND THEN 2) either run the phuze/windows-10-missing-search-icons Python script that fixes common apps in that cache, OR change resolution-scaling such that Windows Search to rebuilds the cache itself. (Your screenshot is showing icons in search results.) Do you have Google Drive installed on the PC? If so, you're probably suffering the bug in it that corrupts a cache specific to Windows Search / Cortana.
